Background
It has been more than 30 years since Louis Brown was born on July 25th 1978 by Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards at Bourn Hall Clinic, United Kingdom. Nowadays almost 5 million babies all over the world have been successfully delivered by this technique. Improvement of knowledge and technologies brought IVF as one of procedure which could solve the problems of many infertile couples, including in Indonesia.
The first Indonesian IVF technique was done at Harapan Kita Children and Maternal Hospital Jakarta in 1987. It was performed by Sudraji Sumapraja, and colleagues. The inspiration came from Prof.DR. Ing. BJ Habibie speech in 1983. Which is mentioned that Indonesia had to follow developed country technology. At the end of 1985 when Sudraji Sumapraja became vice director of Harapan Kita Children and Maternal Hospital, he got the idea to launch the IVF program in this hospital.
This idea considers as a bomb back in that day. The first IVF program was named as Melati. Melati is an acronime of Melahirkan Anak Tabung Indonesia.
In April 16th 1987, the IVF team was formed according to the letter 011/RSAB/DIR/IV/1987 and 053/RSAB/DIR/VII/1987. The first conventional IVF had been successful, and delivered the first Indonesian IVF baby, Nugroho Karyanto on Mei 2nd 1988. And the history continue after that:
- The first Indonesian triplet IVF babies born on March, 27th 1989
- The first Indonesian twin IVF babies born on August, 08th 1989
- The first Indonesian IVF baby born on February 4th 1990 with ZIFT technique
- The first Indonesian quadriplet IVF babies born on Oktober 18th 1991
- The first Indonesian twin IVF babies born on April 10th 1996 with ICSI technique
Although the IA-IVF is still relatively young, but it has a lot of members, which is 23 units IVF center and 105 individual members are spread all over Indonesia. Currently chaired by Prof. Soegiharto Soebijanto, MD, OG(REI),Phd.
